Shrimp and Grits and Other Classic New Orleans Recipes for Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is the last hoorah before the Catholic season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Everyone comes out to eat, drink and enjoy themselves as much as they can before giving up their favorite things for Lent. Though this was how it all began, it’s become a widespread celebration throughout the South.
If you’ve never been to New Orleans to celebrate the official holiday, you’re missing out. The crazy costumes, beautiful floats, and the incredible Cajun-style food make it a truly unique experience.
Since we’ve gathered some of our favorite recipes from the Big Easy, you don’t have to go any further than your kitchen to enjoy Mardi Gras and experience all its delectable flavors. These classic dishes will be sure to give your guests a taste of the deep south—Cajun style.
Get ready to celebrate Mardi Gras by cooking up these tasty New Orleans style dishes!
Moore’s Shrimp and Grits
1 cup quick-cooking grits
1 tbsp. sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 lbs. wild Georgia shrimp; peeled and deveined, tails on
2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
Fresh ground black pepper and salt to taste
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
3 1/2 ounces extra-sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 onion, chopped
1 bell pepper, chopped
¼ cup Moore’s Original marinade
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup chicken stock
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
Prepare the grits according to package instructions. Finish by adding sugar, 2 tablespoons of butter and shredded cheese.
In a bowl, season the shrimp with Cajun seasoning, paprika, Italian seasoning and salt and pepper. Coat shrimp well and set aside.
Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large sauté pan over medium high heat. Add shrimp and sauté while tossing occasionally for 1-2 minutes, then remove from pan.
Add another tablespoon of oil and add garlic, onion and bell pepper. Cook until fragrant.
Add Moore’s Original marinade, chicken stock, cream, flour, hot sauce and butter. Stir well to combine and bring to a boil.
Simmer the sauce about 20-30 minutes.
Add shrimp and toss to coat.
Pour grits onto a plate and top with shrimp. Serve immediately!
Moore’s Bloody Mary
1 tsp Horseradish
1/2 teaspoon Siracha
1 teaspoon Moore's Original Marinade
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon celery salt
6 oz. clamato/tomato juice
2 oz. vodka
Cucumber slices, beef jerky, pickled okra and green beans to garnish, optional
1. Combine all ingredients except garnish
2. Shake over ice
3. Add desired garnishes and serve

1 cup whole milk
1 package yeast
2½ teaspoons kosher salt
2 large eggs
¼ cup honey
¼ cup butter
3½ cups all-purpose unbleached flour
Cream Cheese Filling
12 ounces cream cheese softened
⅓ cup brown sugar
⅓ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 Tablespoon cinnamon
1¼ cup confectioner's sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1½ Tablespoons water or milk
