Memphis in May: America’s most prestigious BBQ competition

Memphis in May: America’s most prestigious BBQ competition The 37th Annual Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is coming up soon! May 15th through the 17th to be exact. And did you know that it’s ranked #1 as America’s most prestigious BBQ competition by USA Today? So yes, it’s a pretty big deal.

With Memphis being widely known for its succulent pork and BBQ restaurants, we think Tom Lee Park in beautiful downtown Memphis is the absolute perfect place for the event!

For this competition, BBQ teams from all across the world come to show off their BBQ skills. More than 250 competition teams are expected to compete for the chance to earn the title of World Champion. The $100,000 in prize money isn’t a bad motivator either.

The barbeque cooking contest isn’t the only event during the Memphis in May International Festival. It also hosts other events such as the Beale Street Music Festival and the Sunset Symphony. Not to mention it’s a non-profit organization with a mission to contribute to the economic growth of its community, create civic pride, encourage awareness of the Memphis heritage and even to build international relationships.

Now that we’ve got you in the mood to do some grilling, we won’t leave you hanging without a new barbeque recipe. Get the grill started and cook up some Moore’s Barbeque Chicken.

    ½ cup Moore's Original Marinade
    1 chicken cut up

    2 cups catsup
    1 tsp Greek seasoning
    ½ cup brown sugar
    1 small onion
    ¾ cup water
    ¼ cup lemon juice

Instructions
1.            Place cut chicken in shallow pan.
2.            Mix other ingredients and pour over chicken.
3.            Cook until tender (1-½ hour or longer) at 375° F.

And we can’t leave out the Memphis in May version of one of America’s favorite singing competitions:  Ms. Piggie Idol! Picture this: adult men wearing tutus and snouts dancing around a stage, singing well known songs with all new lyrics that deal with grilling and barbeque. Now that’s a competition you just have to see for yourself!

If you can, we strongly encourage you to attend the Memphis in May International Festival. We promise, with the to-die-for barbeque and amazing entertainment, you won’t be let down!
