In Season Now: Summer Produce

What’s your favorite part of summer? Longer days, swimming at the pool, trips to the beach, warm weather and backyard grilling are all at the top of our list. When it comes to grilling, you can’t beat using seasonal produce that’s abundant at farmers’ markets and roadside stands this time of year.

There are many reasons why eating seasonal is best, so here are just a few:

  1. Less Expensive — Buying produce out of season means long shipping times, fuel costs and other factors that add up to a higher price tag. When you eat what’s in season, it usually means it’s also somewhat local, which means it will cost you less.
  2. Better for You – The longer food takes to get to you, the less nutritious it is. Since produce that’s out of season has probably traveled for thousands of miles, key nutrients are often lost. Buying seasonally means it hasn’t traveled as far and lots of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients are still present.
  3. Yummy – Think about the difference in taste between a tomato in the summer versus the winter. The taste of the one grown in summer is so much better because it’s seasonal.
